More information about Rioja wine styles:

-Crianza (Generally from $6 to $20) is the wine of choice for most Riojans on a daily basis. It is the house red of nearly every restaurant in Spain, and often is paired with pinchos, the Riojan version of tapas. Excellent with food, Crianza is known for its strong Tempranillo character with overtones of cherry; Crianza evokes the vibrancy of country life and rustic fare.Aged in oak barrels at least 12 months with at least another year in the bottle.

-Reserva (Generally from $14 to $40) is known for its deep and complex flavor with hints of vanilla, cherries and wild berries. It is exceptional when paired with grilled food, or the typical foods of landlocked Rioja such as lamb or game.  Requires 36 months aging between barrel and bottle, with at least 12 months in barrel.

-Gran Reserva (Generally from $18 up) is considered the greatest of Rioja designations and is made only in exceptional vintages. It is an amazingly deep wine, with a complex texture and bouquet meant to be savored by all the senses. Gran Reserva is known for its hints of cedar, cigar box and wild berries. It is known in Spain as a vino de meditación, a wine to drink before the fireplace while contemplating the mysteries of love, life and the sensual pleasures of food and wine. Requires 24 months aging in barrel and a further 36 months in bottle before release.

This is so exciting, Chris! I am downloading the podcast right now.

Might I suggest, for the future, a feature on wines from Georgia, the country. As that is where wine is thought to have originated it might be interesting for others like me who are so interested in wines, but have little time to do the research.

I also can’t wait for you to get around to one of my favorite wine regions: Argentina. We need to talk Malbecs and Torrontes, my friend…. :)

Enjoyed the podcast. I am a fan of Finca la Estacada Reserva myself. There are also white tempranillos that I have never been able to find in the US. Thanks again. hh

Holiday Wines- sure to awaken you from your mono-varietal zombie state

Here are three wines that I think should be on your holiday list, if not on your table. If you are looking for the old school predictable holiday wine recommendation I suggest you look elsewhere.

Global #PortDay 2012

Global #PortDay 2012

This day is an opportunity for not only producers, but wine educators, geeks, blogs, mainstream media, and the general public to put down their Cabernet and Chardonnay and join in a global celebration and education centered around Port.

Global #ChampagneDay October 28th 2011 – A Thank You

The 2nd annual 2011 installment of #ChampagneDay was off to a roaring start. I received too many email to count from countless individuals, wine educators, businesses and producers on how they could participate. What excited me most about this is that many wanted to host events and organize get-together in their local area, which was exactly what I had envisioned for this day all along, people getting together to celebrate, educate, enjoy, and most of all build relationships. I was fortunate to hosted an event with Master Sommelier Andrea Immer Robinson here in Napa at the Westin Verasa.

The ‘tastes like chicken’ phenomenon that is killing terroir!

The ‘tastes like chicken’ phenomenon that is killing terroir!

Is it not time that we do the lesser known regions and the new world wine world the favor of stopping the comparisons to their old world brethren? After all, the only thing that truly taste like chicken is chicken!…

Cuban Picadillo and Saffron Yellow Rice

Cuban Picadillo and Saffron Yellow Rice

This is an old family recipe that my grandmother used to treat us to when we lived in Florida and reminds me of the rich Cuban traditions that were such a big part of my culinary awakening and that still continue to influence me. Invite some friends over grab a couple or three bottles of wine (see my recommendations below) and spoil them with this dish; you will be the talk of the supper club circuit.
